Ding! Ding! Ding! T&T (Trials and Tribulations) had you against the ropes in the last round and it didn’t look good. But now, it's another round…another opportunity…another chance to get back in the fight. What are you going to do?
I used to love watching Rocky movies when I was younger. The thrill of cheering on the underdog was so exhilarating! My heart would race when I would see Rocky up against the ropes taking a beating from his opponent.
Rocky would rise up from his corner and come out swinging! From my seat, I willed Rocky to get up from his corner and fight. He may have looked a mess, but he came into those final rounds swinging like his life depended on it! I cheered him on even though it looked like he was going to give up. But, just when I thought the fight was over or wished that the beating would just stop, Rocky would persevere!
Many of us for one reason or another have been sucker punched by life and have allowed those blows to put us in a corner. From lost visions and dreams, to troubled marriages, job layoffs, painful experiences and sickness or disease…we have all experienced something.
So, what do you do when you’ve retreated into the corner of despair and can’t seem to get back into the fight?
- Rise Up! - It's time to rise up, stand up and shake it off. Come out of your corner, your hiding spot or your comfort zone. You’ve been down there too long. It takes courage to get back up and get into the fight again. Dig deep and find that person that originally started the fight. Ask the Lord to give you the courage to face that thing that put you in the corner in the first place (In some cases that may be you).
- Plant your feet…When a fighter plants their feet, they are prepared to not easily be moved. Plant your feet and take a stance. Anticipate and prepare for distractions or disruptions. You’re not going down easy this time. Even during the times where everything seems to be going smooth, fill yourself up with prayer, scripture and positive influences. Prepare to stay the course even when things don’t look pretty. What will be different this time?
- Swing like your life depends on it…because it does! This is going to look different for everyone. Your swing depends on your fight. Swinging might look like pushing past the negative thoughts or fear and doing something that scares the heck out of you. Swinging might look like trying something again even though it failed the first time. Swinging might look like speaking your truth out loud, instead of suffering in silence. It's not always going to feel good, but SWING LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT!
I know this is easier said than done, in many circumstances. But, what’s the alternative? You can’t stay in that corner any longer. Time is up! The bell for the next round has rung. So, come out swinging!
For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
Luke 10:19 ESV
Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.
Ephesians 3:20 ESV
Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us,
