I know the title of this blog post might have made some of you cringe, but at the same time intrigued you enough to continue to read it. Well, you can relax I won’t be dropping any “F” bombs that will make you regret your decision to follow your curiosity and click on this post. :)
The “F” word that I’m referring to today can be used as an adjective or an adverb, depending on how you use it, and can be used to define one’s mental or physical state.
Although we can point to a common definition, the word FREE holds very different meaning for very different people. I’ve learned (and in some cases still learning) to totally immerse myself in this word after experiencing some pretty traumatic experiences in my life. Unfortunately, I have experienced the opposite of this word, both physically and mentally. At the age of 18, I was stabbed with a 6” inch butcher knife and held captive, in a small apartment living room, by the man that abused my sister. As a result of that experience, I gave away my freedom to the other four letter word…fear.
This was a common theme throughout the course of my life until I made a conscious decision to trade my fear for freedom. When I look back at what held me in captivity, I can’t help but praise the Lord for setting me free and giving me the power and foresight to recognize and overcome what has the potential to threaten my freedom.
So, when I refer to this exhilarating four letter word, my definition comes from the courageous ability to be FREE to openly worship and praise my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ…FREE to boldly speak my truth in the face of fear…FREE to unshackle myself from expectations that the world and others have placed on me…FREE to walk in my God-given destiny without apologies…FREE to try things that scare me, but have the potential to bless others…FREE to push past the trials and tribulations that bound me…FREE to confidently look in the mirror and embrace the person staring back at me…FREE to be ok with my flaws and courageous enough to change the ones I can control…FREE to passionately pursue my goals and dreams even if I fail the first time…FREE to be able to speak life over myself and silence the inner me and the enemy that tries to come against my dreams…FREE to give myself permission to live and enjoy my life to the fullest…FREE to be the marvelous, motivating, masterpiece God created me to be!
How can this simple four letter word be so powerful and carry so much weight? If you’ve ever been held physically or mentally captive, then your testimony and pursuit for freedom is what gives miraculous meaning to this word. FREE…how do you define it?
I encourage you today to make an intentional choice to find your definition of the word FREE in your life and persistently pursue after it!
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
2 Corinthians 3:17
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
