When was the last time you did something for the first time? Let that question marinate on your mind for just a minute. I mean really…when?
I'm not talking about the first time you put on a new pair of shoes or wore a new outfit for the first time. I'm speaking about an action that you know you want or need to take in your life, but you just simply haven't got around to it yet. I'm talking about getting outside of your comfy, cozy, complacent zone to do something that's on your bucket, wish, or "I've always wanted to do" list. Still thinking?
In October, I flew to China to help develop corporate leaders in a leadership development program. This was my first time in Asia and I was only armed with two words of the Mandarin Chinese language - Ni hao' and Xièxiè (hello and thank you)! Whew…talk about nervous! When the opportunity presented itself, I have to be honest, I was both nervous and excited. I'd NEVER spoke or facilitated in Asia and didn't know the first thing about all the culture norms. I almost talked my way out of this incredible opportunity, because I didn't know if I was ready for this NEW experience, BUT GOD. God said I was ready. So, I found my courage and took on this incredible opportunity and now I have a new international experience under my belt!
So, think about it…when was the last time you did something for the first time? If you're still high-fiving yourself for that thing you did 5 years ago, well, it's probably time to move the celebration forward. As I look around me and all that's going on in our world I realize just how short and precious life moments are during this time. Our precious Creator didn't create us to stay confined to a comfy box. No, He charges us to explore His creations, express the gifts He gave us and enhance the world with them.
This isn't new information that I'm sharing, but why is it that we will wait until it's almost too late before we'll make bold moves and try new things? Is it FEAR…FINANCES…FRIENDS…FAILURES…or just YOU? Uncover the barriers that are preventing you from crossing something off your list or FINISHING something you started. Start with some "low hanging" fruit and do 1 thing this week so that when asked the question, "When was the last time you did something for the first time?", your answer can be more recent than the response you gave at the beginning of you reading this post.
I can't wait to see what you do! Don't be shy…share your experience with us. We want to hear it.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for reminding me that I still have things to do and that my experiences are not yet finished. Thank you for planting new ideas, events, and opportunities in my path. Allow me to open my mind and my heart to walk into something new and different today, Lord. I know that you gave me a spirit of boldness and courage and I will activate it today. Bring back to my mind those things that I said that I've always wanted to do, those things that have lie dormant on my list and help me begin to check them off. I thank you for your gentle, but firm push to move from complacency to consistency. Let me be an example for someone else who may need the same push. I love you and honor you. In your precious name, Amen!
